I read "In Harms Way" recently and was truly facinated by the story and the courage displayed by our men in uniform. However, on pages 132 & 133 I could not believe how passive the officers were when told of the SOS from the Indianapolis. At that time wasn't some credibility given to the message since it identifies the Indianapolis by name at night time hours? If they were not able to confirm it why not at least send out a plane at the stated coordinates to check it out the next day? I have only read the book once and don't know all the facts but I found it tragic the immediate assignment of blame to captain McVay when there appears to be a multitude of errors made in the loss of the sailors.
